Sophie derived from the Greek word “Sophos,” meaning “wisdom.” It is also the French version of the popular name Sophia. This feminine name has been in use since the 4th century and is a popular choice for baby girls even today.

Besides the name signifying wisdom, a revered martyr saint named Sophia also added to the allure of the name. This perhaps made the name popular among royalty in Europe.
