Origin, Meaning, And History of Ramah

Ramah is a Hebrew female name that means ‘high’ or ‘exalted,’ and also interestingly, ‘thunder.’ It is a variant spelling of Rama, which is mentioned in the Hebrew Torah as the fourth son of Cush and also as a region in the southwestern Arabian Peninsula.

It is located near Gibeon, Mizpah, and Gibeah, and has been identified with the modern-day town of Er-Ram, about 8 kilometers north of Jerusalem. According to the biblical account, Ramah was first mentioned in Joshua 18:25 and was later fortified by King Baasha of the northern kingdom to control access to Jerusalem. However, King Asa of the southern kingdom of Judah successfully employed the Syrian king to attack Baasha and dismantle the fortifications of Ramah, using the materials to fortify Judah’s defenses at nearby Geba and Mizpah, as recorded in 1 King 15:17–22 and 2 Chronicles 16:1–6.

In popular culture, the name finds mention in‘The Chosen,’a television series that depicts the historical events of Jesus of Nazareth’s life and ministry. Ramah played by Yasmine Al-Bustami is a former vintner and a follower of Jesus. The first series of its kind, ‘The Chosen’ was created, directed and co-written by filmmaker Dallas Jenkins. The show is set primarily in Judaea and Galilee during the 1st century and focuses on Jesus and the individuals who met and followed him. There is a book titled‘Ramah: A Light Is Dawning in the Darkness’by Robert Munday.
