Origin, Meaning, And History Of Makeda

Makeda is a girl’s name of Ethiopian origin, meaning ‘greatness’ or ‘one who achieved greatness.’ The name is also believed to mean ‘beautiful.’

Makeda is said to be the Ethiopian name of the 10-century B.C. Queen of Sheba, who has been mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible. The Queen of Sheba is a figure first mentioned in the Hebrew Bible who brings a caravan of valuable gifts of gold, jewels, and spices for the King of Israelites, Solomon. According to the Biblical story, she visited to test the wisdom of Solomon by asking him to solve a number of riddles.

She even appears in the Islamic traditions as mentioned in the Quran, and is the subject of numerous legends. According to the Ethiopian national epic, Kebra Nagast, Makeda and Solomon’s son, Menilek, was made the King of the Solomonic dynasty in Ethiopia. He is claimed to be the foremost ancestor of the Ethiopian dynasty. She is also identified in the present day with the South Arabian kingdom of Saba, which is the modern-day Yemen and Ethiopia.

Although there are no known variants of the name Makeda, some cool nicknames are Keda, Kedah, and Mikeda.
