Origin, Meaning, And History Of Keiran

Kieran is a traditional Irish boy’s name with roots in Gaelic culture. It is derived from the Gaelic name ‘Ciaran,’ which means ‘black-haired’ or ‘dark-haired.’ This name is also a diminutive form of the name Ciar, and in Irish history, Ciar was a leader and the son of Fergus, the King of Ulster. The County Kerry in Ireland is named after Fergus.

Ciar was also considered the ancestor of the tribe Ciarraige, and its feminine form is Ciara, which can be associated with the Irish nun Ciara. Saint Ciara was an Irish nun famous for establishing a monastery at Kilkeary in the 7th century.

Ciara, a female version of Kieran, also means ‘little dark girl’ in Irish. Alternatively spelled as Ciaran, Kieran was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland named Saint Ciaran of Clonmacnoise. He is sometimes referred to as Saint Kieran, the Younger, whose feast day is celebrated on September 9th.

Kieran can also have alternate spellings like Ciaren, Keiron, and Kyron and nicknames like Kier, Ran, Ann, and Key. It was a popular name in Ireland but has gained popularity in the US and was ranked one of the most popular names in 2019.

The name has appeared in popular culture as the name of several fictional characters. Kieran Branson is a fictional character appearing in the television show “Downton Abbey.” He is Tom Branson’s brother and visits Downton Abbey in 1920. Kieran is also a fictional character appearing in the trilogy book “The Dark Artifices” written by Cassandra Clare.
