No matter how happy you are as a couple, pregnancy might take a toll on your relationship in one way or the other. The ever-increasing hormonal imbalance, pressure of the due date catching up, and the never-ending doctor appointments are bound to get your relationship on tenterhooks which is usually calm and comfortable. Especially when you’re going through a high-risk pregnancy, the stress intensifies beyond expectations. With all this going on, there are certain fights every couple gets involved in, though unwillingly. But, fret not; these aren’t all the bad ones. In fact, some might prove to be beneficial in the long run.

In this article we focus on some of the rather trivial yet common arguments and disagreements that you might encounter with your partner. Let us take a look.

1. The “Do Not Lift Heavy Things!” Fight

You would have probably heard practically everyone asking you to take it easy during your pregnancy. Yes, it seems to come out as a sincere concern, but constantly having to hear it may make it unpleasant nevertheless. It is easy to flip out when everyone tells you how to think, feel, or take care of yourself.

2. The “Choosing The Best Hospital” Fight

When it comes to pregnancy, in general, not every doctor or healthcare team will suit your needs. It differs from person to person. While you may be comfortable with a certain hospital and doctor, your pregnant sister may not feel the same.

In the case of high-risk pregnancy, you could do about five to six hospital tours with your husband, and still not find the ideal one. Needless to say, it can easily become the cause of conflict.

3. The “I Am Tired Of Doing All The Work” Fight

Getting ice cream at 3 in the morning or ordering a takeaway is not exactly a pleasant chore for husbands to do every now and then. And, as he is leaving the supermarket, you send him a text saying “don’t forget to get some candies for me.” Well, it could get frustrating! But, this is just the tip of the iceberg, a high-risk pregnancy might just ask way more of the non-pregnant partner. But carrying the weight of pregnancy isn’t easy either, right? So, there you square off!

4. The “When Can We Get Bed Action Again?” Fight

Okay, these might not exactly be termed as fights, but it is one of the most common topics of disagreement amongst couples. When you are facing a high-risk pregnancy, you’re recommended to be on pelvic rest. It is just another way of saying “hey, no action for you anymore.” And this could be a reason enough to make anyone snap.

5. The “You Should Rest In Bed All Day” Fight

At first glance, bed rest for a pregnant woman, especially one with high-risk seems legit. But there’s more to it than meets the eye. As it turns out, bed rest isn’t exactly as necessary and it may come with its own set of pros and cons (1). Yes, resting in moderation is recommended. However, if your husband asks you to stay in bed all day (out of care, of course), it is time to lay down the facts. As too much of anything is bad, complete bed rest might only worsen complications.

As you might have noticed these aren’t fights that cannot be easily resolved. In fact, the sooner you get rid of the stress the better it’ll be for your baby (2). The role of the husband is crucial here. It is imperative that you make your partner understand what you are going through. This isn’t easy, but that’s the only way to make the journey smooth. While no amount of discussion will ever make the nervous parents take it easy completely, there’s no harm in trying!
