Origin, Meaning, And History Of Thao

Thao is a gender-neutral name meaning ‘courteous’ and ‘respectful of parents’ in the Vietnamese language. The Hmong people of Southeast Asia’s Thao or Thor clan are the ancestors of the name Thao. Typically, the Hmong people lived in Laos, China, and Vietnam.

Thao, which means ‘grass, herbs,’ is also said to be a Sino-Vietnamese name. The origin of this name is the Vietnamese spelling of the name Cao. Again, the Chinese character 草, is the source of the word cao. This name is also associated with an Austronesian language spoken by the Thao people and an indigenous group in central Taiwan.

The Thao/Ngan community is a Taiwanese indigenous group residing close to Sun Moon Lake (also known as Lake Candidius) in central Taiwan for over a century, and it’s believed they may have been there since the Qing dynasty. With a population of approximately 800 individuals, they are considered one of the smallest officially recognized indigenous peoples in Taiwan.

The name is also used for the upper part of the Red River that originates from Yunnan Province, China and flows through three provinces in Vietnam before merging with the Black River and Lo River at Viet Tri City. Thao Suranari was the noble title given to Lady Mo, the spouse of the deputy governor of Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand.

In popular culture, there are references to the name like in the Hollywood film Gran Torino directed by Clint Eastwood. The film has a character namedThao Vang Lor, a Hmong American man who is forced by a Hmong gang to attempt to steal the protagonist Walt Kowalski’s Gran Torino. Thao is portrayed by actor Bee Vang in the film which was released in 2008.

Thao Nguyenis one well-known celebrity who shares the name, Thao. She is a Virginia-born American singer-songwriter who currently considers San Francisco her hometown. She served as the original lead vocalist, lyricist, and leader of the band called Get Down Stay Down. Hip-hop, country, and folk have had an impact on her music.
