Origin, Meaning, And History Of Romeo

Romeo is an Italian boy’s name from Late Latin Romaeus or Late Greek Romaios, meaning ‘from Rome’ or ‘Roman.’ In medieval Italian, it means ‘pilgrim to Rome.’ The name was first used by Luigi da Porto in his 1524 novel Giulietta e Romeo. The hero of the novel was Romeo Montecchi. Later, Shakespeare adapted the novel into his play Romeo and Juliet, in which the hero was Romeo Montague. It is one of the beloved Shakespearean names for baby boys.

Romeo is of Italian origin, but it has still become popular in other European countries in recent times. In England and Wales, the name has nearly always been among the top 500 names for baby boys since 2002. In France, the name has been in use since the early 20th century, though it has a fluctuating graph throughout the years. The variant Roméo is more prevalent in France. In fact, in 2021, the name ranked 97th in the country.

The Icelandic and Hungarian form of the name is Rómeó. Surprisingly, there is the Japanese name Romeo too, which is made from the kanji 朗 (ro) meaning ‘bright’ or ‘clear,’ 明 (me) meaning ‘clear’ or ‘bright,’ and 生 (o) meaning ‘raw’ or ‘live.’ There may be other meanings also depending on the kanji used. It is most likely influenced by the Italian Romeo.
