Origin, Meaning, And History Of Quetzalxochitl

Quetzalxochitl is a feminine name of Aztec origin and fosters beautiful meanings such as ‘queen,’ ‘precious flower,’ and ‘large beautiful tailfeather.’ The name is derived from the Quetzalcóatl which means the feathered serpent in the Aztec language of Nahuatl. Here quetzalli meant ‘tail feather of the quetzal bird [Pharomachrus mocinno],’ and coatl meant ‘snake.’ He was one of the major deities of the ancient Mexican pantheon. References to this deity appear as early as the Teotihuacán civilization (3rd to 8th century CE). At the time, he was considered an earth and water deity.

Later during the 9th and 12th centuries, there were some big changes and Quetzalcóatl became the god of the morning and evening star, and his temple was the center of life in the city of Tula. During the 14th to 16th centuries in Aztec times, Quetzalcóatl was highly respected as the patron of priests, credited with inventing the calendar and books, and revered as the protector of goldsmiths and other skilled workers. He was the god of learning, writing, and of books. The planet Venus was also associated with him. Quetzalcóatl symbolized death and rebirth as both the morning and evening star. Accompanied by Xolotl, a god with the head of a dog, he supposedly descended to the underworld of Mictlan to collect the bones of the ancient dead. By anointing these bones with his own blood, Quetzalcóatl is said to have created the humans who inhabit the current universe.

Aside from his depiction as a feathered serpent, Quetzalcóatl was frequently portrayed as a bearded man. In his role as the wind god, Ehécatl, he was depicted wearing a mask with two tubes that represented the blowing wind, and he wore a conical hat that was typical of the Huastec people who lived in east-central Mexico.

The phonetic spelling of the name is ‘k- eh- t -Z -AH-Lsh- oh- CH-EE-t-l’.

Due to its rarity, Quetzalxochitl has not been mentioned in any popular culture references nor does any famous personality bear this name. The Baby Names Popularity Charts do not currently list this name’s usage among the top 100.
