Origin, Meaning, And History Of Philomena

Philomena is a feminine name that comes from the Ancient Greek word ‘Philoumene,’ meaning ‘to be loved.’ The pronunciation of the name is ‘filow-mena’ or ‘fila-mena.’ Some variants of the name in other cultures and languages include Filomena (Italian/Spanish/Portuguese), Filimena (Macedonian), and Philomène (French).

The most famous bearer of the name was Saint Philomena, who was also known as the Philomena of Rome. She was known as the miracle healer who worked for the poor, sick, and destitute. She is known as a patron saint for the youth and babies and was affectionately called ‘The Wonder Worker.’ Later, she was martyred at the tender age of thirteen at the behest of the Roman emperor Diocletian in 304 A.D. Centuries later, her remains were discovered within the Catacomb of Priscilla and were later moved to Mugnano del Cardinale, which later became the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena in 1805. This rediscovery renewed her popularity as a major religious figure associated with many miracles.

Petrus de Dacia, or Peder Nattergal, also popularly known as Philomena, was a renowned Danish scholar during the 13th century. He was known for his works on mathematics and astronomy.
