Origin, Meaning, And History Of Kyra

The name “Kyra” has its origins in the Persian language and has various meanings, including “throne,” “sun,” and “one who is farsighted.”

Kyra is a feminine name that may have Greek roots. The original version of the name Kyra is the Greek word kurá or Cyra. Several Iranian rulers were called Cyrus, and the English word “Cyrus” is the Latinized version of the Greek “Ko”, “Kros”, which was derived from the Ancient Persian “Kru.” Kro is the modern Persian translation of the name.

Iranology researchers, linguists, and historians have debated the derivation of Cyrus in the past and continue to do so today. Various meanings have been suggested for the Old Persian name “kuru,” including “the Sun,” “youth,” and “hero.” The Elamite name “Kura” has been translated as “one who bestows care.”

The name has also been found on several Ancient Persian monuments and inscriptions. The name is often considered a form of Kira, a derivative of the Irish feminine name Ciara, which comes from the Irish Gaelic “Ciarán,” meaning “little dark one.” In the past, infants with dark features were often given the name Ciara. Although names like Keira, Kira, and Kyra are preferred in England, Scotland, and the US, the traditional spelling of Ciara is still preferred in Ireland.

Currently, Kyra is most popular in the Netherlands. Kyra debuted on the US female naming rankings in 1969, but it did not become popular until 1988 when more parents began using it for their newborn daughters.
