Origin, Meaning, And History Of Freja

Freja是丹麦和瑞典形式的名称reya. These names are derived from the term Freyja meaning ‘lady’ in Old Norse. In Norse mythology, this was the name of the goddess of love, beauty, war, and death. Some scholars believe that she has the same origin as Frigg, who was the wife of Odin and the mother of Thor. The name is considered to be an epithet given to the goddess which later became a given name.

Freja有几个不同的语言变体。Apart from the popular Freya, it is also spelled Freyja, Frea, and Frøya. Frėja is the Lithuanian and Norwegian form of the name. The masculine forms of the name are Frey and Freyr. Incidentally, Freyr is considered to be Freyja’s brother in Norse mythology.

In most Scandinavian countries, the spelling of Freja is commonly used. In Denmark and Sweden, it is used both as a boy’s name and a girl’s name, though it is more popular as a girl’s name in both countries. In Greenland and Iceland, the name is used equally for both genders. Meanwhile, in Finland and Norway, the name is used only as a girl’s name. Freja was one of the most popular names in Denmark for several years. It even ranked 1st in 2004.

In the English-speaking world, the ‘Freya’ variant is used more commonly than Freja as it is the common spelling of Freyja in English. It became popular in the 2000s in England and Wales. In fact, after 2017, the name has been in the top 20 names for girls there. In Ireland, the name found popularity after 2010. However, in Scotland, the name caught on more quickly and has been among the top 10 most popular names for girls in the past few years.
