Origin, Meaning, And History Of Fleur

Fleur is a feminine name of French origin, which means ‘flower.’ Fleurette is its diminutive form and Flora, Flore, Flower, Fiore, Fiorella, Flor, Florinda, and Fflur are some variants of the name in other languages and cultures.

Saint Fleur, also known as Flora, was born in Maurs, in the diocese of Saint-Flour, France, around 1300. At 13, she took the veil in the Sisters of St. John of Jerusalem monastery at Beaulieu, in the diocese of Cahors, France, where she dedicated herself to caring for the sick and the poor in the monastery’s hospital. It is said that her love for God and some mystical encounters suppressed her allures and temptations. She was mainly devoted to St. John the Baptist, Our Lady of the Annunciation, and the Crucified Christ.

Like many saints, Saint Fleur bore the brunt of suspicion because people were unable to acknowledge or comprehend the exceptional virtue of her compassion and charity. The abbess believed that the young Fleur was stealing food needed by the community. The young sister was obliged to reveal what she was hiding in the folds of her cloak when the abbess followed her one day. As a miracle, the food she was carrying for the poor hidden inside her cloak transformed into beautiful blowers. And ever since that day, she bore the name of Saint Fleur.

Saint Florus was another prominent religious personality, martyr, and the first bishop of Lodève. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint-Flour and the commune of Saint-Flour, a place in the Auvergne region of France whose inhabitants are popularly referred to as Sanflorains, are all named after him.
