Origin, Meaning, And History Of Eulalio
Eulalio is a name of Greek origin that was adopted in Italy. The name comes from the Greek name ‘Eulalios.’ which is made up of two parts: ‘eû (εὖ),’ meaning ‘well,’ and ‘laléō (λᾰλέω),’ meaning ‘talk, speak, chirp, chat, chatter, prattle.’ So, the name means ‘to speak well.’ The name Eulalia is the feminine form of the name Eulalio and is used in English, Italian, and Spanish languages.
Saint Eulalia was a young Roman Christian virgin who was martyred in Barcelona during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian. She was only 13 years old and is considered a co-patron saint of Barcelona. Some scholars dispute whether she is the same person as Saint Eulalia of Mérida, who was also a young Roman Christian martyred during the same period of persecution in the city of Emerita, which is now known as Mérida in Spain.
The name is the Spanish version of Eulalius. Eulalius was an antipope who opposed Pope St. Boniface I from December 418 to April 419. He was supported by a group of clerics and became the first antipope to involve the temporal authorities in papal elections. Emperor Honorius requested that both Eulalius and Boniface leave Rome while awaiting a council’s decision, but Eulalius ignored this order and returned to perform the Holy Week services at the Lateran. As a result, he was rejected, and Boniface was declared the legitimate pope. Eulalius was unable to regain the Holy See due to ill health and died in obscurity in Campania.
Eu-la-lio and eul-al-io are the phonetic spelling of the name.
