Origin, Meaning, And History Of Deidra

Deidra is a name of Gaelic origin derived from the Irish name ‘Deirdre’ or ‘Deirdreán.’ The name is believed to have been first used in ancient Ireland and has a rich history and meaning.

Deidra means ‘sorrowful one’ or ‘broken-hearted’ in Gaelic. According to Irish legend, Deirdre was a beautiful woman who was said to be so lovely that when she was born, the druid Cathbad prophesied that she would bring about the downfall of the kingdom of Ulster. King Conchobar Mac Nessa, who ruled over Ulster, took Deirdre as his own to prevent the prophecy from coming true. However, Deirdre fell in love with a warrior named Naoise and fled with him to Scotland, where they happily lived until they were eventually hunted down and killed by Conchobar.
