Origin, Meaning, And History Of Brady

Brady is an anglicized form of the Irish surname Ó Brádaigh, which means ‘spirited; wide; or descendant of Brádach.’ The surname Brady initially appeared in Galway, a city in the Connacht region of Ireland, on the island’s west coast, and in County Clare, ancestral home of the Bradys.

They were related to the King of Munster in 130 AD, Olioll Olum, through a lineage of kings and chiefs of John O’Grady, alias O’Brady. King Henry VI of England knighted O’Brady’s child, Sir Denis O’Grady alias O’Brady of Fassaghmore.

This name-related uncertainty persisted throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, and to further compound the problem, the bloodline constantly switched between several spellings. Finally, the Clann was founded in Limerick in Kilballyowen, and the current Grady Chief is among the few honorable chiefs in Ireland.

Griffith’s Valuation, a survey of land and property occupants conducted from 1847 to 1864, provided information to map the Brady homes. When Gilbert MacBrady was elected Bishop of Ardagh in 1396, the oldest surviving records of the anglicized surname were first discovered. The Irish surname Brady originated in the Gaelic Kingdom of Breifne, and its bearers were formerly a distinct sept in this region.

In Ireland, immediately after the Great Famine, over two out of every five Bradys considered Cavan their home. After the 1901 Irish Census, more than 50 years later, the Brady surname is still widely used in these regions.

Among the few known variants of the name, Braidy in English is one of the most commonly used ones.
