Origin, Meaning, And History of Anahi

Anahi, a regal name, has a folklore connection in Spanish culture, implying ‘beautiful like a flower’ or ‘speaker’. It also has a relationship with Tupi-Guarani, a South American language because it is a variant of the word ‘awati’.

On top of that, it can be traced back to Persian roots, where it signifies being ‘immortal’ or ‘immaculate.’ The name is a shorter form of Anahita, an Old Persian form of the Iranian Goddess associated with fertility, health, and healing.

During the conquest of Paraguay by the Spaniards, Princess Anahi was a political agitator who was burned by them. They thought she was a witch, and burning her alive would mean imminent success. She, however, took martyrdom while praying to the Almighty to save the Guayaki people. Legends say that when she died, a Ceibo tree sprouted at that spot, signifying God’s answer to her desperate prayers.

While the Spaniards were exploring Eastern Bolivia, a soldier named Felipe de Urriola y Goitia contacted the Ayoreo tribe. Princess Anahi fell in love with him, and they got married. The princess received a two-colored gemstone as a wedding gift from her father. Historians believe that due to certain circumstances, the tribe planned to murder Princess Anahi’s husband but accidentally hurt her, leading to her death. While dying, she presented that stone to her husband. The purple and honey gemstone symbolizes her love for her people and her husband.
