Origin, Meaning, And History of Yaretzi

A feminine name, Yaretzi is believed to have Nahuatl or Aztec origins. The name is borrowed from the Aztec language, where it means ‘you will always be loved.’ The Nahuatl Aztec language originated in the 15th century in South America and Mexico and is now considered endangered.

Historians also believe that Yaretzi is the Spanish form of the feminine name Yaritza. They speculate that Yaritza is an elaborated form of Yara that is mostly used in Arabic and Tupi cultures. In Arabic, Yara is derived from the Persian word ‘yar’ meaning ‘helper’ or ‘friend.’ It also means ‘small butterfly’ in Arabic. In Tupi cultures, it is a variant of ‘Iara’ meaning ‘lady of the water.’

Although Yaretzi as a name does not make an appearance in historical scriptures, its Tupi variant, Iara, is prevalent in Brazilian folklore. Early Tupi legends believe that Iara was the famous name of a beautiful river nymph who would persuade men into the water.
